Why our best guess for aliens might be a microbe

In short: We often imagine little green men or humanoid invaders because of science fiction tropes. However, scientists argue that the most realistic extraterrestrial life may look nothing like us. To find them, we have to stop looking at Hollywood and start looking at Earth's own extreme survivors.

The search for extraterrestrial life is currently shifting from pure speculation toward rigorous theoretical modeling based on chemistry, physics, and biology. A significant milestone occurred on April 17, 2025, when NASA announced the discovery of convincing signs of biological activity on K2-18b, a planet located 124 light years away. The atmosphere of this world contains chemical compounds that, on Earth, are associated exclusively with living organisms—at concentrations a thousand times higher than those found on our own planet.

Because we have no direct contact with other worlds, researchers use 'extremophiles' and massive marine mammals as biological blueprints. By studying how life thrives in Earth's harshest environments, scientists can model how organisms might survive in non-terrestrial conditions. This includes looking at miniature microbes or the complex communication systems of sperm whales to hypothesize how intelligent civilizations might interact with one another.

A major hurdle in this research is 'humanoid bias.' Microbiologist André Antunes notes that science fiction often defaults to lifeforms similar to humans, but evolution on other planets could produce wildly different anatomies. Alien life might be closer to microscopic organisms or entirely unique structures—like the heptapods from Ted Chiang’s novella—that do not share our physical proportions, sensory organs, or even our methods of communication.

Ultimately, understanding alien life requires a 'thinking outside the box' approach. While we dream of monsters and heroes, the reality may be organisms so strange they are difficult to recognize as living at all. By studying the diversity of Earth’s own inhabitants, we prepare for a reality that might defy every creative imagination we have ever had.
