Gas giants that defy the rules of our own solar system
In short: In our solar system, gas giants like Jupiter stay far from the Sun. But across the cosmos, a class of planets called Hot Jupiters behaves differently. These massive worlds orbit incredibly close to their parent stars, completing full circuits in just a few days and enduring extreme temperatures.
A Hot Jupiter is defined by two primary characteristics: its size and its orbit. These planets are gas giants, possessing enough gravity to hold onto hydrogen—the universe's most abundant element. To reach this scale, a planet typically needs to be more than twice the diameter of Earth, resulting in a mass of about ten Earth masses. This distinguishes them from smaller rocky worlds and places them in the same category as Jupiter and Saturn. The 'Hot' in Hot Jupiter refers to their proximity to their host stars. While our Jupiter orbits the Sun at a distance five times greater than Earth's, Hot Jupiters reside much closer. For example, the planet 51 Pegasi b orbits its star at a distance twenty times closer than Earth is to the Sun.
This extreme proximity causes these planets to complete an entire orbit in as little as four days, creating a dynamic environment vastly different from the stable orbits found in our own neighborhood. Astronomy reached a milestone when 51 Pegasi b became the initial exoplanet found orbiting a Sun-like star. While missions like Kepler were specifically designed to find Earth-sized planets in habitable zones—where liquid water can exist—they also reveal the diversity of the cosmos. These range from burning hot gas giants like Hot Jupiters to frozen worlds as small as Mars, challenging our initial assumptions about how planetary systems are structured.
