Mars may have once hosted the chemical building blocks of life
In short: NASA's Perseverance rover has uncovered a record-breaking trove of complex carbon molecules in an ancient Martian riverbed. While carbon alone doesn't prove life ever existed, its high concentration in specific geological formations suggests the Red Planet might have once been a habitable cradle for microbial life.
In July 2024, the Perseverance rover explored the Bright Angel formation within Neretva Vallis, an ancient river valley in the Jezero Crater. This area was carved by rushing water billions of years ago and once hosted a lake. The rover identified a specific rock nicknamed "Cheyava Falls," which contains patterns resembling terrestrial microbial fossils. While these patterns could be caused by non-living processes, they represent one of the clearest potential biosignatures ever identified on Mars. The discovery is bolstered by the presence of "macromolecular carbon"—the chemical foundation of all known life. Using the SHERLOC instrument, researchers mapped these molecules and found the highest concentration of organic molecules to date on the planet. The rocks are composed of clay and silt, materials that are excellent at preserving past microbial life on Earth. Additionally, the site is rich in sulfur, oxidized iron (rust), and phosphorous, which could have provided a rich energy source for microbial metabolisms. To put this in context, scientists compared this data to findings from the Curiosity rover at Gale Crater, located about 2,300 miles (3,700 kilometers) away. The distribution of carbon across both sites suggests that water was widespread across the Martian surface in the deep past. While NASA has shared this data with the wider science community to confirm or refute its biological potential, the current consensus is that these findings provide a groundbreaking new puzzle piece in the search for ancient Martian life.
