The Alpha Centauri system might be safer for life than our own Sun

What Would Happen If We Found Life On Alpha Centauri? · 15:59 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: Our nearest stellar neighbors are more than just a destination for future explorers; they are a laboratory for the possibilities of life. While Proxima Centauri is often the focus, the brightest stars in the system might offer a surprisingly stable environment for biology to thrive.

The Alpha Centauri system, located roughly 25 trillion miles away, is a complex triple-star arrangement. It consists of a pair of Sun-like stars, Alpha Centauri A and B, and a smaller red dwarf, Proxima Centauri (Alpha Cen C). While Proxima is the closest star to Earth, it is a volatile red dwarf that frequently emits dangerous X-ray flares, making it a hostile environment for life. In contrast, the A and B pair offer a more temperate alternative. Recent data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory suggests that planets orbiting Alpha Centauri A and B are not being subjected to extreme X-ray radiation. In fact, the radiation levels around Alpha Centauri A are actually better than those around our own Sun.

This is a critical finding because high-energy radiation can strip away planetary atmospheres—a process scientists believe occurred on Mars—and deliver lethal doses to unprotected organisms. If life does exist there, it could manifest in several ways. Scientists consider three primary scenarios: the discovery of simple microbial life, the existence of complex ecosystems similar to the Mesozoic Era's diverse and gigantic fauna, or the presence of intelligent beings. These beings might be biologically distinct from humans, perhaps evolving from different lineages like felines or birds, or they could even be a less technologically advanced human-like species.
