How a 47-year-old probe survives just 3 degrees above absolute zero

Why Hasn't Voyager Frozen Yet After Half a Century? · 13:07 · Video: Insane Curiosity · Watch at the source

In short: Voyager 1 is currently drifting through the coldest reaches of the universe, where temperatures hover near minus 270°C. By all logic, its electronics should have failed decades ago. Yet, it remains awake, transmitting data from the interstellar void by balancing a delicate dance between heat and power.

Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 has traveled over 14 billion miles (23 billion km) into deep space. It currently operates in an environment near minus 454°F (-270°C), a temperature only about 3 degrees above absolute zero—the coldest point physically possible in the universe. To survive this extreme cold without its fuel lines freezing or its electronics failing, the spacecraft relies on a radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG). This nuclear power source converts heat from decaying plutonium into electricity. However, this energy supply is steadily dwindling. An annual reduction of roughly 4 watts occurs within the RTGs. A vital lack of energy is currently being managed by JPL's NASA technicians following almost 50 years of service. To prevent the spacecraft's undervoltage fault protection system from automatically shutting down vital components, they have begun a strategy of 'careful sacrifices.' This involves systematically turning off non-essential instruments to preserve enough electricity to keep heaters running and core systems active. On April 17, engineers took a significant step by powering down the Low-energy Charged Particles (LECP) experiment. The LECP had operated almost continuously since launch, studying ions, electrons, and cosmic rays from both our solar system and the wider galaxy. While losing this data is a setback, it ensures that Voyager 1 can continue to operate its two remaining science instruments—one for plasma waves and one for magnetic fields—providing unique insights into the interstellar medium that no other human-made craft can reach.
