In short: The 10.5 cm leFH 18 was the backbone of German artillery in World War II. While it offered superior firepower and stability, its massive weight created a logistical nightmare. It was a masterpiece of engineering that nearly broke the very animals meant to pull it through the mud.

Designed in the late 1920s and adopted in 1935, the leFH 18 was a significant upgrade over its predecessor. It featured a three-point split trail gun carriage that increased stability and allowed for a 56-degree traverse. It also boasted a high muzzle velocity of 470 m/s, supported by a pneumatic recuperator that used compressed air and liquid heated to 55 °C to return the gun to its firing position. However, these advancements came at a cost: the gun weighed over two tons, making it exceptionally heavy for a mobile weapon.

This weight became a critical liability on the Eastern Front. While the German army assumed a steady supply of motor vehicles would suffice, the reality of mud and snow often forced a reliance on horse-drawn transport. The heavy horses frequently became exhausted, requiring crews to walk on foot to spare them. This logistical strain was so severe during the Battle of Moscow that it directly influenced the development of the lighter leFH 18/40 variant. In contrast, motorized versions of the howitzer were far more efficient, achieving march speeds of 40 km/h and offering a radius of action 10 times greater than horse-drawn batteries.

Despite its mobility issues, the leFH 18 was highly versatile. It could fire 28 different shell types and was used in various roles, including anti-tank combat in North Africa. Its production was massive, with over 11,000 units manufactured by 1945. The weapon's legacy persisted long after the war, with exports to countries like Sweden, Finland, and Portugal, and even seeing limited use in the Syrian Civil War.
