Liverpool matched Manchester United's 20 titles in a record-breaking 2024–25 season
Manchester City began the 2024–25 Premier League as four-time defending champions. Liverpool ended their run, clinching the title with a 5–1 win over Tottenham at Anfield on 27 April and four games still to play. It was their 20th English league crown, drawing level with Manchester United's long-standing record.
At the bottom, the season set unwanted records. Southampton went down on 6 April with seven matches left and only 10 points from 31 games, the earliest relegation in Premier League history. Leicester followed after failing to score in nine straight home games, a top-flight first, and Ipswich made it three. For the second year running all three promoted sides went straight back down, only the third time that had happened in English top-flight history, and never before had all three been confirmed with more than four games to spare.
Managers came and went quickly. Manchester United sacked Erik ten Hag in October with the club 14th, and Ruben Amorim replaced him. Southampton dropped Russell Martin after a 5–0 home defeat, then parted with his successor Ivan Jurić after just 108 days. Everton brought back David Moyes, twelve years after he left for Old Trafford.
Everton also said goodbye to Goodison Park after 133 years. In the final men's match there, on 18 May, Iliman Ndiaye scored both goals in a 2–0 win over Southampton, becoming the ground's last scorer before it became home to Everton's women's team, the largest dedicated women's football stadium in England.
The season brought practical changes too. The winter break was scrapped in favour of more rest over Christmas, and semi-automated offside technology arrived on 12 April 2025, first used at the Etihad Stadium. The league's average attendance of 40,421 per game was the highest of any football league in the world.
