Adding a round of 32 gave the 2026 World Cup a knockout puzzle: which third-placed sides went through determined their opponents, and the regulations listed 495 possible combinations. Once the bracket settled, Morocco swept aside co-host Canada 3–0, and Paraguay's rough approach against France drew condemnation around the world.
The knockout phase ran from June 28 to July 19, 2026: 32 matches, a third-place game included, culminating in the final at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford. Qualifiers were the top two from each of the 12 groups plus the eight best third-placed teams. Every tie had to produce a winner, with 30 minutes of extra time after a level 90 and a shootout if still needed.
FIFA's design sent four group winners against runners-up, pitted the other eight winners against third-placed qualifiers and paired the remaining eight runners-up with each other. Which third-placed side faced which winner depended on the exact set of eight that advanced, and Annex C of the regulations tabulated every possibility. Third-placed teams from eight groups went through, triggering outcome 67 in that table, which, for instance, matched Group D winners the United States with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In Houston, Canada faced Morocco, who were unbeaten in four previous meetings, including a 2–1 group win at the previous World Cup. After a ceremony marking 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, Azzedine Ounahi struck in the 50th minute from an Achraf Hakimi cut-back and again in the 82nd from a Brahim Díaz pass, and Soufiane Rahimi added a third in the 98th. With Egypt beaten by Argentina, Morocco were the only African side left in the quarterfinals, while Canada departed with their best World Cup showing, having gone out in the group stage in 1986 and 2022.
Paraguay had lost all five earlier meetings with France, including a 7–3 defeat in 1958 and a golden-goal exit in 1998, a game in which the current French coach, Didier Deschamps, played. This time the kick-off heat reached 38 degrees Celsius. The deadlock broke in the 70th minute, when VAR spotted Diego Gómez fouling substitute Désiré Doué and Kylian Mbappé sent Orlando Gill the wrong way from the spot. Paraguay committed 13 fouls to France's 11 yet escaped any booking while France collected three, and referee Ilgiz Tantashev drew heavy criticism. Elsewhere, Brazil met Norway, the one opponent they had played without ever winning.
