The return of José Mourinho to the Santiago Bernabéu
In short: After a period of transition marked by the departure of long-serving icons, Real Madrid entered the 2026–27 season under a familiar, high-pressure leadership. The club secured the return of José Mourinho as head coach, signaling a tactical shift for the 123rd season of the club's history.
The 2026–27 campaign serves as a significant turning point for Real Madrid, defined by the end of an era for several club legends. The team saw the departure of captain Dani Carvajal, who concluded a 23-season tenure as a free agent. The club's link to the final member of the team that secured three straight UEFA Champions League trophies from 2016 to 2018 concluded with his departure. Additionally, David Alaba departed as a free agent after a five-year spell that saw him collect eleven trophies.
In the wake of these departures, the club underwent a major leadership overhaul. Following the first presidential vote by members in two decades, Florentino Pérez was re-elected as president. The club then moved to appoint José Mourinho as head coach, who signed a contract running until June 30, 2029. Mourinho's tenure officially began on July 13, following the conclusion of Álvaro Arbeloa's stint as first-team head coach. The summer window saw strategic moves including the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and a free transfer for Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva from Manchester City.
The early season results reflect a team in flux but maintaining its competitive edge. While the club maintained a perfect start to the league campaign with three consecutive wins—including a 4–0 victory over Málaga—they faced early hurdles, including a 1–0 loss to Real Betis and a 1–2 defeat in the Madrid derby against Atlético Madrid. Despite these setbacks, the squad remains anchored by high-profile performers like Kylian Mbappé, who recorded a hat-trick in the second match of the season, and Jude Bellingham.
