In short: In 2018, ASVEL Basket underwent a radical identity shift that sparked intense fan backlash. The club traded its historic green for black and white, justifying the move with a provocative marketing logic: they believed that for a European audience, the color green simply "does not make you dream."

Founded in 1948 through the merger of two multi-sport clubs in the Lyon region, ASVEL has established itself as the most successful basketball club in France. Its trophy cabinet is extensive, boasting 21 LNB Élite championships and 10 French Cup titles. The club's dominance was recently highlighted during the 2021–22 season, when they secured their first "three-peat" in 32 years by defeating Monaco in the Finals. The club's history includes two French Supercups and one French Federation Cup. They also secured a Semaine des As Cup title. The team's home matches are hosted at the OL Arena and the Astroballe.

The club's evolution is marked by high-profile leadership and corporate investment. In 2014, NBA star Tony Parker became president, followed by NBA player Nicolas Batum joining as a shareholder and director of basketball operations in 2017. During this period of funding, OL Groupe, the parent firm of Olympique Lyonnais, acquired a 10% share of the female squad and a 25% portion of the male side for roughly €3.7 million in a 2019 transaction. The 2019 investment deal included a specific plan for a new EuroLeague-standard arena. This move followed the club's return to the EuroLeague in 2019 via a wild card.

Infrastructure and branding have also seen massive shifts. In 2016, the club announced a €60 million project for a new multi-functional arena, which opened in November 2023 with a capacity of up to 16,000. While the name LDLC ASVEL was adopted in 2018 for sponsorship reasons, the branding also incorporated a new logo featuring the number four—a tribute to club legend Alain Gilles—while maintaining the 'V' from the original design. The new venue was designed by the architectural firm Populous and Citinea. Construction on the site officially commenced in January 2022.
