The wrestler who traded a title for a chance at glory
In short: In the high-stakes world of professional wrestling, Austin Aries redefined the rules of ambition. By creating the 'Option C' clause, he didn't just win a championship; he engineered a way to trade his current status for a shot at the ultimate prize, forever changing the sport's landscape.
Austin Aries, born Daniel Healy Solwold Jr., rose to prominence in Ring of Honor (ROH) in 2004. He quickly became a cornerstone of the promotion, notably defeating Samoa Joe to win the ROH World Championship at Final Battle 2004. His tenure was marked by high-level leadership; in 2005, he was named the head trainer of the ROH wrestling school, succeeding CM Punk. However, his career was defined by a complex, often turbulent relationship with his peers and various wrestling organizations.
Aries' move to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) in 2005 showcased his ability to influence the industry's mechanics. While competing in the X Division, he secured a record-breaking 301-day reign as champion. During this period, he pioneered the 'Option C' clause, a strategic move that allowed him to trade the X Division Championship for a TNA World Heavyweight title opportunity at the Destination X event. This maneuver highlighted his reputation as a tactical competitor who viewed championships as leverage rather than just trophies.
His career has been a cycle of factional warfare and personal friction. From leading 'Generation Next' to forming 'The Resilience,' Aries often found himself at odds with former allies, including Roderick Strong. Despite a hiatus from 2019 to 2021, Aries remains a significant figure in the independent circuit and Major League Wrestling (MLW), where he currently holds the MLW National Openweight Championship and the Opera Cup.
