From academic scholar to wrestling icon: the dual life of Austin Watson
In short: Austin Watson, known in the ring as Xavier Woods, balanced a master's degree in psychology with a storied 16-year WWE career. Beyond his championship success, he pioneered gaming culture in wrestling through his YouTube channel, UpUpDownDown, and later transitioned to All Elite Wrestling, proving that intellectual pursuits and athletic performance coexist.
Born in Columbus, Georgia, in 1986, Watson pursued an unconventional path for a professional wrestler. While training for his career, he attended Furman University, graduating in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a master's degree in psychology. His academic background often intersected with his professional life; he famously secured his initial WWE developmental contract by showing up unannounced at Florida Championship Wrestling, a bold move that mirrored his earlier, coincidental encounter with future tag-team partner Kofi Kingston at Deep South Wrestling in 2007.
Watson's WWE tenure, spanning from 2010 to 2026, was defined by his role in The New Day. Alongside Big E and Kofi Kingston, he became a 13-time tag team champion. The group's second reign with the Raw Tag Team Championship lasted 483 days, a record that stood until February 2021. Beyond the ring, Watson utilized his platform to bridge gaming and wrestling. He launched the YouTube channel UpUpDownDown in 2015 and served as a host for the G4 network revival between 2020 and 2022, cementing his status as a prominent gaming personality.
In May 2026, Watson and Kingston departed WWE after refusing a contract offer that included a pay cut exceeding 50%. By August 2026, Watson debuted in All Elite Wrestling as Austin Creed. Competing as part of The New Level, he quickly secured the AEW World Trios Championship. His career remains a testament to versatility, encompassing everything from winning the 2021 King of the Ring tournament to publishing a book and collaborating on music, all while maintaining a consistent presence in both the wrestling and digital entertainment industries.
