In short: Bass Pro Shops is more than a sporting goods store; it is a sprawling ecosystem of resorts, boat manufacturing, and massive wildlife attractions. From its origins in a liquor store to a multi-billion dollar acquisition of Cabela's, the company has redefined how outdoor recreation is branded and sold.

Bass Pro Shops began in 1972 when Johnny Morris started selling fishing tackle out of his father's Brown Derby Liquor Store in Springfield, Missouri. Inspired by his father's experiences as a World War II veteran, Morris expanded the business by launching the first Bass Pro Shops catalog in 1974 and introducing Tracker Boats in 1978. By 1981, the first physical store opened, eventually leading to the development of the Big Cedar Lodge resort in 1988.

The company's growth strategy involves high-concept retail environments. While many locations are themed as 'Outposts' or 'Sportsman's Centers,' the 'Outdoor World' stores feature immersive cypress forest themes with wood and rock architecture. The flagship 'Pyramid' in Memphis, Tennessee, is a massive complex featuring a 28-story free-standing elevator, a giant cypress swamp, and a hotel. In 2016, the company expanded significantly by acquiring Cabela's Inc. for $4.5 billion, a deal involving $1.8 billion from Goldman Sachs and $600 million from Pamplona.

Beyond retail, Bass Pro Shops is a major player in marine manufacturing and conservation. It owns White River Marine Group, which manages brands like Ranger and Tracker, and acquired Hatteras Yachts in 2021. The company also operates the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium, which hosts around 35,000 animals. Despite its commercial success, the company has faced scrutiny since 2010 regarding its receipt of billions in taxpayer subsidies. However, it remains a recognized conservation leader, with Johnny Morris receiving the Audubon Medal in 2019 for his efforts to mobilize the next generation of conservation leadership.

The brand's commitment to land management is codified in its resorts. As the sole global destination featuring five Audubon International Signature Sanctuary golf courses, Big Cedar Lodge mandates rigorous environmental protocols, such as wildlife habitat improvement and water quality tracking.
