The club that set a league record for consecutive wins
In short: In 2009, Burton Albion achieved a feat of dominance so absolute that sponsors declared them champions before the season even ended. Despite the public relations stunt, the club's journey from non-league obscurity to the Championship is a masterclass in persistence and structural evolution.
Formed in 1950, Burton Albion spent decades navigating the lower tiers of English football. The club's identity is deeply tied to its location, adopting the nickname 'The Brewers' to honor the brewing heritage of Burton upon Trent. Their rise was punctuated by a period of significant instability in the 1970s, where they frequently oscillated between promotion and relegation in the Southern League Premier Division. The club's modern era was defined by the long tenure of Nigel Clough. Appointed as player-manager in 1998, Clough oversaw a transformative period, including the 2001–02 season where the club won the Northern Premier League by a 15-point margin. His leadership eventually propelled the club into the Football League in 2009. That season was particularly notable: despite Clough leaving mid-campaign for Derby County, the team set a league record for consecutive wins.
In February 2009, while 19 points clear at the top, sponsors Blue Square declared them winners in a stunt that paid out all bets. Burton reached its competitive peak in 2015–16, securing promotion to the Championship for the first time in history. They spent two seasons in the second tier, notably securing their status in 2017 before eventually returning to League One. The club's infrastructure also evolved, moving from Eton Park to the £7.2 million Pirelli Stadium in 2005. This new ground, designed by Jon Hawkeye, has served as a blueprint for several other modern stadiums across the UK.
