Celtic's European Cup winners in 1967 were all born near Glasgow
On 25 May 1967 in Lisbon, Celtic beat Inter Milan 2–1 to become the first British club to win the European Cup. Every player in the side had been born within 30 miles of Glasgow. That season Celtic won every competition it entered, five trophies in all, and it remains the only club to have managed that Quadruple.
The club was born out of charity. On 6 November 1887, in a church hall in the Calton district, an Irish Marist brother named Walfrid set up a football club to raise money for his Poor Children's Dinner Table, which fed the poor of Glasgow's East End. He borrowed the idea from Hibernian in Edinburgh and chose the name Celtic to honour both Irish and Scottish roots. The nickname, the Bhoys, gets its odd extra h from Gaelic spelling habits.
Success came fast. Celtic beat Rangers 5–2 in its first match in May 1888, reached the Scottish Cup final in its debut season, and later won six straight titles between 1905 and 1910. The 1920s produced Jimmy McGrory, whose 550 goals in 547 games remain a British record. Under his management in 1957, Celtic thrashed Rangers 7–1 in the League Cup final, still the highest-scoring domestic cup final in Britain.
Jock Stein arrived in 1965 and built the Lisbon Lions, then kept winning until a ninth consecutive league title in 1974 matched the world record of the day. Two decades later the club nearly vanished: on 3 March 1994 the Bank of Scotland moved to call in receivers over a £5 million overdraft, and businessman Fergus McCann reportedly took control minutes before bankruptcy.
Revival followed. Martin O'Neill, appointed in 2000, won a treble in his first season, reached the 2003 UEFA Cup final in Seville and finished with a club-record win rate of 75.5 percent. The 80,000 fans who travelled to Seville won Fair Play awards from FIFA and UEFA despite defeat. Celtic's 56 league titles and 43 Scottish Cups are both records.
