In short: Carlos Baleba represents a specific evolution in football: the high-intensity hybrid. Combining the stamina of a marathon runner with the power of a physical presser, he has transitioned from a French academy prospect to a Premier League standout, eventually commanding a massive £70 million transfer fee.

Carlos Baleba’s trajectory is a study in steady development across three major European leagues. Born in Douala, Cameroon, to Cameroonian-French parents, he began his journey at Futur Soccer FC before joining the École de Football des Brasseries du Cameroun academy at age 13. His move to Lille in January 2022 initially saw him in the reserves, but he eventually broke into the first team under Paulo Fonseca, making his professional debut on August 7, 2022, in a 4–1 win against Auxerre.

His move to Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2023 marked a significant step up in competition. On a five-year contract involving a base fee of €27 million and potential add-ons of €3 million, Baleba quickly became a fixture in the midfield. He won the club's Young Player of the Season award for the 2024–25 campaign, a season highlighted by a dramatic injury-time winner against West Ham United in April 2025, which was named the Premier League Goal of the Month.

Tactically, Baleba is prized for his versatility. He can operate as a holding midfielder or a box-to-box engine, utilizing a combination of pace and power to drive past opponents. While he is noted for ball-winning and high-pressing tenacity, he also possesses the technical range to drop deep and initiate play with left-footed passes. This balance of physical dominance and progressive distribution made him a high-value target for Manchester United, who secured his signature in August 2026 for a reported £70 million fee.
