The long road from Arsenal academy to Championship dominance
In short: Chuba Akpom’s career is a masterclass in professional persistence. After years of loans across multiple leagues, he found his peak not in the Premier League, but by becoming the most prolific marksman in the English second tier, eventually securing a permanent move to the top flight.
Born in London to Igbo Nigerian parents, Akpom joined the Arsenal academy at age six. His early trajectory was marked by high potential but frequent movement; he was loaned to six different clubs—including Brentford, Nottingham Forest, and Hull City—before finding a breakthrough in Greece. After moving to PAOK for £900,000 in 2018, he played a vital role by netting the 2019 Greek Cup Final winner and assisting the team to their initial Super League trophy in 34 years.
Akpom returned to England in 2020, signing for Middlesbrough for £2.75m. While his initial return saw him relegated to the Under-21 squad, he eventually flourished under manager Michael Carrick. During the 2022–23 season, Akpom reached a career zenith in the EFL Championship. Having netted 28 goals across 40 games, he ended as the league's leading marksman, marking the first time a Middlesbrough athlete reached 20 league goals in one campaign since 1990.
His dominance in the second tier was validated by a sweep of honors, including EFL Championship Player of the Season and PFA Team of the Year for 2022–23. Despite his success in England, Akpom’s international path was equally nomadic. After representing England at various youth levels, he officially announced his intention to switch to the Nigerian national team in September 2019, citing a personal desire to represent his heritage.
Today, Akpom’s career serves as a testament to the 'loan army' journey. From a 2013 debut as an unused substitute to a permanent move to Ipswich Town in 2026, he navigated the complexities of European football to establish himself as a proven goalscorer at the highest levels of the English game.
