From Polish youth academies to Premier League stardom: the ascent of Jakub Kiwior
In short: Few defenders navigate the complex hierarchy of European football as rapidly as Jakub Kiwior. After honing his skills in Poland and Belgium, he transitioned from the Slovak league to the intense pressure of Arsenal and eventually Porto, proving his worth on the world's biggest stages.
Jakub Kiwior's journey is a masterclass in steady progression through Europe's footballing landscape. Born on 15 February 2000, his early development began in Poland with PUKKS Chrzciciel Tychy and UKS Grom Tychy before joining GKS Tychy in 2012. A pivotal moment in his formation occurred in 2016 when he moved to the Belgian academy of Anderlecht, where he remained until 2018.
His professional career took flight in Slovakia, making his debut for Železiarne Podbrezová in early 2019. Following a stint with Žilina, where he demonstrated his utility as both a defender and a ball-controlling midfielder, he moved to Serie A's Spezia in August 2021. It was here that managers like Thiago Motta began utilizing his ability to control possession, a trait that would soon attract the attention of the Premier League.
In January 2023, Arsenal secured Kiwior in a deal worth approximately £20 million. He quickly became a vital component of the Arsenal backline, notably stepping up during injury crises to deliver standout performances in the Champions League against Real Madrid in early 2025. His international career has been equally impactful; since making his Poland debut on 11 June 2022, he has started every match for his country in both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024.
The latest chapter of his career saw a move to Portugal. After joining Porto on loan in August 2025, the club triggered a permanent transfer on 1 July 2026 for a fixed fee of €17 million (£14.7 million). The deal, which included a massive €70 million release clause, highlights the high valuation placed on a player who has risen from regional academies to the pinnacle of European competition.
