In short: A prodigy who became a published author at 14, Daniel Naroditsky was a dominant force in speed chess. From defeating world No. 2 Fabiano Caruana to building a massive streaming following, his career was a whirlwind of intellectual achievement and high-stakes competition before his untimely death at age 29.

Daniel Naroditsky was a versatile chess force, excelling in both classical and rapid formats. After securing the FIDE Master title in 2007 by winning the World Youth Chess Championship's Under-12 division, he attained Grandmaster status in 2013. His technical prowess was evident early; at just 14 years and 3 months old, he became one of the youngest published chess authors with his book, Mastering Positional Chess.

Beyond his competitive play, Naroditsky was a prolific educator and commentator. From 2020 until passing away in 2025, he acted as the Charlotte Chess Center's resident grandmaster and wrote for the New York Times as a chess columnist. On digital platforms like YouTube and Twitch, he amassed hundreds of thousands of followers, becoming a leading voice in the chess community through his insightful educational content.

His career was not without controversy. In late 2024, he faced unsubstantiated cheating accusations from former world champion Vladimir Kramnik. Naroditsky described the campaign as an unhinged attempt to destroy his life, a sentiment echoed by many in the professional chess community. These accusations eventually led to a FIDE ethics investigation and a subsequent two-year ban for Kramnik in 2026.

Naroditsky passed away on October 19, 2025, at his home in Charlotte. A medical examiner's report later attributed his death to probable cardiac arrhythmia caused by systemic sarcoidosis. His legacy continues through the Daniel Naroditsky Memorial Fund, which has raised over $1.1 million to support young players through scholarships and tournaments.
