Dominic Calvert-Lewin joined Hurst and Peters as an England World Cup final scorer
Only three England players have scored in a World Cup final. Two are Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters from 1966. The third is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whose goal beat Venezuela 1-0 in the 2017 under-20 final in South Korea, a year after Everton had bought him from Sheffield United for just 1.5 million pounds.
Calvert-Lewin entered Sheffield United's academy in 2005 and played as a box-to-box midfielder in the youth sides. A youth loan to non-league Stalybridge Celtic in December 2014 moved him up front, and he responded with six goals in five games, including two on his debut. A spell at Northampton Town in League Two brought eight more across 26 appearances before Everton signed him in August 2016, a move he called too good to resist.
His best run came at the start of 2020-21. He scored a league hat-trick against West Bromwich Albion and a cup hat-trick against West Ham within the same September, the first Everton player to manage two in a month since Dixie Dean in 1931, and won the Premier League player of the month award. Gareth Southgate called him up, and he headed a goal on his England debut against Wales at Wembley. He finished that season with 21 goals and the club's player of the year prize.
Injuries then took a heavy toll: a broken toe and thigh damage, a knee problem and hamstring trouble cost him long stretches as Everton fought relegation. He still struck the winner against Crystal Palace that secured survival in May 2022, and in April 2024 scored in the first Goodison derby victory over Liverpool since 2010. After nine years, 273 games and 71 goals, he left when his contract ran out in 2025.
Newly promoted Leeds United signed him on a three-year deal. He scored seven goals in six consecutive matches and was named player of the month for December 2025, the first Leeds winner since Rio Ferdinand in 2001. Thomas Tuchel recalled him to the England squad in March 2026.
