In short: In 1935, a meeting at an Ipswich picture house sparked a regional football revolution. It aimed to unite a fractured landscape of local leagues into a single powerhouse. While it faced existential threats, world wars, and mass departures, it remains a vital artery of the English football pyramid today.

The Eastern Counties Football League (now known as the Thurlow Nunn League) was born from a movement to consolidate several regional leagues in East Anglia. Before 1935, the area was fragmented into various competitions like the Norfolk & Suffolk League and the Essex & Suffolk Border League. The push for a unified league intensified after Norwich City's promotion to the Football League in 1934, which caused a surge in local interest. A pivotal 'Meeting of Representatives' took place on 17 February 1935 in Ipswich, where ten clubs from various leagues gathered to formalize the new structure.

The league's early years were marked by instability and high-stakes movement. In its inaugural 1935–36 season, Harwich and Lowestoft finished level at the top, requiring a 1936 play-off match to decide the championship. The league nearly collapsed in 1937 when all five Essex clubs departed for a new league, leaving only six members. It survived by recruiting new members, including Colchester United reserves and Newmarket Town, and eventually regained its footing as the Essex County League failed to thrive.

Beyond the drama of survival, the league has served as a diverse home for various types of clubs. London heavyweights such as Chelsea and Arsenal sent 'A' sides here, while Gillingham reserves also participated—representing the sole Kent club to ever feature in the competition. Today, it operates at levels 9 and 10 of the English football system, feeding into the Isthmian League and the Northern Premier League. It continues to balance its regional roots with a modern structure, recently adding Division One South in 2018 to accommodate the growing number of clubs in Essex and London.
