The high-stakes drama of Russia's rising figure skating prodigy
In short: Elena Kostyleva's rise to the top of Russian figure skating is defined by record-breaking jumps and intense behind-the-scenes friction. From hospital stays to navigating complex coaching loyalties and public controversies, her journey offers a raw look at the pressures of elite sports.
Elena Kostyleva's path to the ice began with a health crisis. Born in 2011 in Voronezh, she spent her first year in the hospital due to being born premature and developing bronchitis at four months old. To improve her health, her family began her skating training at age three. This early start led to a move to Moscow in 2018 to pursue a professional career, where she trained under several prominent coaches, including Eteri Tutberidze and Igor Lyutikov.
Her career has been marked by significant technical milestones and public scrutiny. Kostyleva has landed both the triple Axel and quadruple jumps, eventually surpassing Alexandra Trusova's record by landing 51 quadruples in official competitions as of March 2025. However, her trajectory has been complicated by interpersonal drama. In 2021, a minor incident involving a yogurt and a dietary violation allegedly caused her to fall out of favor with coach Eteri Tutberidze, a story that became a point of contention between Kostyleva and teammate Margarita Bazyliuk.
The most intense scrutiny involves her relationship with coach Evgeni Plushenko and her mother, Irina Kostyleva. In late 2025, a CCTV video allegedly showed Irina hitting Elena at the Plushenko academy, leading to an official complaint filed by Plushenko with the Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights. Despite these reports of abuse and a temporary switch to coach Sofia Fedchenko, Kostyleva returned to Plushenko in January 2026, calling him her 'coach for life.'
Despite these personal hurdles, Kostyleva remains a dominant force, winning the Russian Junior Championships in both 2025 and 2026. In June 2026, she was approved as an Individual Neutral Athlete, allowing her to compete internationally. However, her recent international debut was hampered by a right gluteal muscle injury sustained while attempting to restore her quadruple jumps.
