Elliot Anderson played for Scotland's youth teams before starring for England
Elliot Anderson grew up in Whitley Bay and pulled on a Scotland shirt at under-16, under-17 and under-18 level, thanks to a Glasgow-born grandmother. He even won a Scotland under-21 cap and a senior call-up. Yet in 2025 he made his full debut for England, and a year later helped them to World Cup bronze.
Born on 6 November 2002, he joined Newcastle United at eight, following in the footsteps of his maternal grandfather, Geoff Allen, a Newcastle winger in the 1960s. He debuted for the first team in January 2021 in an FA Cup defeat to Arsenal. A loan to League Two's Bristol Rovers in 2022 made his name. Manager Joey Barton compared his movement in the box to Diego Maradona's, he won the division's goal of the month with a solo run against Harrogate Town, and on the final day he scored in an 85th-minute strike in a 7–0 win over Scunthorpe that lifted Rovers into the last automatic promotion spot on goals scored.
Back at Newcastle he came on late in the 2023 League Cup final and had a header at Nottingham Forest ruled out by VAR, a call widely described as bizarre. A lower back injury then kept him out for four months. In July 2024 Forest signed him for a reported £35 million, though The Daily Telegraph later put the fee nearer £15 million. In 2025–26 he led the Premier League in touches, duels won, fouls won and possessions won.
His international path zigzagged. He switched to England in 2021, then went back to play for Scotland's under-21s against Belgium in 2022, before pulling out of later squads to keep his options open. An injury ended his first senior Scotland call-up in 2023. He finally settled with England, scoring in the quarter-final win over Spain as the under-21s won the 2025 European Championship, and made the tournament's team.
In July 2026 Manchester City bought him for a reported £116 million, briefly a record for an English footballer until Morgan Rogers moved to Chelsea for £117 million nineteen days later.
