Ezri Konsa's climb from Charlton's academy to a £51 million Arsenal defender
Brentford paid a reported £2.5 million for a young Charlton defender in 2018. Eight years later the same player had captained Aston Villa, lifted the Europa League, scored against France at a World Cup and joined Arsenal for about twenty times that fee. Ezri Konsa's rise was steady rather than sudden.
Konsa was born on 23 October 1997 in Silvertown, east London, to a father from DR Congo and an Angolan mother. After starting at the youth club Senrab, he joined Charlton Athletic at 11 and signed professional terms in December 2015. His debut came in August 2016, and in his first full season he made 39 appearances, filled in at midfield and full-back and was named the club's Young Player of the Year.
Brentford signed him in June 2018, and he scored his first senior goal on the final day of that season. Aston Villa, newly promoted, paid £12 million in July 2019, reuniting him with Dean Smith, the manager who had taken him to Brentford. Two goals against Leicester in December 2021 made him the first Villa defender since 2010 to score twice in a Premier League match. He recovered from a serious knee injury in 2022, scored against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals in April 2025, became vice-captain under Unai Emery and started the 3–0 Europa League final win in May 2026. In seven seasons he passed 280 appearances.
Arsenal, the reigning champions, signed him in August 2026 and he debuted, fittingly, in a 1–0 win at Villa Park. Analysts rate him as a quick, ball-carrying centre-back who rarely needs desperate tackles; in April 2024 his 91 percent tackle success was the best of any defender in Europe's big five leagues.
With England he won the Under-20 World Cup in 2017 and the Toulon Tournament in 2018. His senior debut came against Brazil at Wembley in March 2024, and at Euro 2024 he started the quarter-final win over Switzerland as England went on to finish runners-up. At the 2026 World Cup he partnered John Stones and Marc Guéhi, moved to right-back against Mexico after a red card, and scored in the 6–4 third-place victory over France.
