Fabian Hürzeler quit playing at 22 and was a Premier League boss at 31
Fabian Hürzeler came through Bayern Munich's academy, but his playing career in German reserve football was essentially over at 22. He had long wanted to coach anyway. Eight years later Brighton hired him, making the Texas-born German the youngest permanent head coach the Premier League has ever had.
Born in Houston on 26 February 1993 to a Swiss father and German mother working in the United States, Hürzeler moved to Munich at two and holds German, Swiss and American passports. He joined Bayern's youth system at 10, earned 21 caps for German youth sides, and played for the reserve teams of Bayern, Hoffenheim and 1860 Munich. His former teammate Emre Can predicted a great coaching career for him.
In 2016 he dropped into amateur football as player-coach of FC Pipinsried and lifted the club from the fifth tier into the fourth, where it survived one season before going down. Meanwhile he assisted with Germany's under-18 and under-20 teams. In 2020 he became assistant to Timo Schultz at FC St. Pauli, while also playing for a Hamburg sixth-division side that won promotion in 2022.
When Schultz was dismissed in December 2022, Hürzeler took over as interim and was confirmed two weeks later, at 29 the youngest head coach in the second division. A side flirting with relegation won 10 matches in a row by April 2023, the month he earned his UEFA Pro Licence at 30, and on 12 May 2024 St. Pauli won promotion to the Bundesliga.
Brighton appointed him on 15 June 2024 to replace Roberto De Zerbi. His reign opened with a 3–0 win at Everton and an unbeaten August that included a home victory over Manchester United, earning him Manager of the Month. Brighton finished eighth, completing a first league double over Tottenham, yet missed Europe when Crystal Palace won the FA Cup. Another eighth place in his second season did bring a Conference League spot, and in May 2026 he extended his contract to 2029.
