The van that became a Volkswagen: a masterclass in industrial synergy
In short: In a rare move of industrial cooperation, the Ford Transit Custom has become the blueprint for a rival's flagship. By sharing its architecture with Volkswagen, Ford has turned a mid-sized workhorse into a cross-continental standard for both commercial and passenger transport.
The Ford Transit Custom debuted in 2012 as a mid-sized, front-wheel-drive alternative to the larger Transit. While it quickly established itself in Europe and Mexico, its evolution has been defined by a shift toward modularity and diverse powertrains. Since its inception, the model has expanded from a basic diesel workhorse to a sophisticated platform offering mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and full battery-electric variants. The model was first shown at the 2012 Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham. It was not available in the United States or Canada at launch. It did not reach the Chinese market until 2016. A 2017 update introduced a new engine family with minor styling tweaks.
A significant turning point occurred in 2022 with the unveiling of the second-generation Transit Custom. This generation introduced a semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension, a design choice aimed at lowering floor height and improving handling. This engineering shift was so robust that it led to a major industry partnership: the Volkswagen Transporter will be rebadged as a second-generation Transit Custom, effectively making Ford's engineering the backbone for one of Europe's most prominent van lines.
The platform's versatility is showcased in its specialized derivatives. This includes the 'Nugget' campervan, converted by Westfalia, and the Swift Monza, which targets young families. For high-tech users, the E-Transit Custom utilizes 400 V traction batteries with pouch cells shared with the Ford F-150 Lightning, offering a range of approximately 380 km. This synergy demonstrates how a single mid-sized van can serve as a commercial tool, a luxury camper, and a high-tech electric vehicle simultaneously.
