In short: The tenth-generation Honda Civic marked a strategic shift for the brand. By abandoning region-specific designs in favor of a single global platform, Honda achieved significant cost savings. These resources were directly reinvested into the vehicle, resulting in a lighter, more rigid, and more responsive driving experience.

The tenth-generation Civic (FC/FK), produced from 2015 to 2022, represented a major pivot in Honda's manufacturing strategy. Moving away from the dedicated European models used since the sixth generation, Honda transitioned to a unified global model. This 'lead-country' approach focused development on the key U.S. market, allowing the company to leverage cost savings to enhance the car's overall quality and performance.

Engineering refinements were central to this generation's identity. The unit body was lightened by 31 kg (68 lb) through the use of higher-grade steel, and the center of gravity was lowered by 15 mm (0.6 in) via a lower floor and engine placement. To improve handling, Honda implemented a redesigned suspension featuring MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link rear setup on an ultra-rigid subframe. The steering system also saw significant upgrades, including a variable gear ratio and a thicker, 30 mm diameter steering column for improved feel.

The range offered diverse body styles, including sedan, hatchback, and coupe, with the Type R hatchback serving as a performance flagship. The Type R's 2.0-litre turbocharged i-VTEC engine produced 306 hp (310 PS) and 295 lb⋅ft of torque. While the coupe variant was popular in North America initially—accounting for 16 percent of sales in 2016—it was eventually discontinued in July 2020 due to declining popularity, with sales dropping to 6 percent by 2020.
