From a Reddit hobby to a global esports phenomenon
In short: In 2013, a Swedish consultant spent two weeks building a tool to turn Google Street View into a game. Today, it is a competitive sport with world championships, machine learning rivals, and a community that can identify a country by the specific tape on a vehicle's roof rack.
GeoGuessr was born from Anton Wallén's personal love for exploring remote locations on Google Street View. Developed in just two weeks using Backbone.js and the Google Maps API, the game initially launched as a browser experiment in May 2013. It quickly went viral, evolving from a novelty into a sophisticated educational tool. Players learn to identify 'metas'—geographic and cultural markers like writing systems, architecture, driving directions, and even specific vegetation or soil types. The competitive scene has reached professional heights, culminating in the GeoGuessr World Championship. These tournaments feature high-level players who use advanced clues like bollards, chevrons, and the position of the sun to narrow down locations. The game's complexity is so high that Stanford University researchers developed a machine learning tool in 2023 that could beat top-ranked players like Trevor Rainbolt after only three attempts. This AI's ability to classify climates and locations has potential applications in climate research, though it also raises privacy concerns. Despite its success, the game has faced hurdles. Its 2025 Steam release was initially one of the worst-rated games on the platform due to subscription requirements. It also faced a significant community backlash in May 2025 when it initially planned to participate in the Esports World Cup in Saudi Arabia; the company withdrew within 48 hours following a protest by map creators. Today, GeoGuessr remains a unique hybrid of geography, data analysis, and high-speed competition.
