The marathon's official length was actually decided by a royal box
In short: We think of 26.2 miles as an ancient, sacred distance. In reality, the modern marathon's specific length is a byproduct of British logistics and a desire to finish in front of royalty. It is a story of myth-making, imperial planning, and human endurance.
The marathon commemorates a legendary feat from 490 BCE, where a Greek soldier supposedly ran approximately 40 km (25 miles) from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce a victory over the Persians before expiring. However, historical records suggest this narrative was later conflated with the story of Pheidippides, another soldier who reportedly ran from Athens to Sparta.
The modern marathon was revived during the first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens. The inaugural winner was Spyridon Louis, a Greek runner who competed with almost no formal training plan compared to today's elite athletes like Molly Siedel or CJ Albertson. While the race became a global phenomenon, its distance remained inconsistent until 1924.
The standardization of the marathon at 42,195 meters (26 miles 385 yards) in 1924 was not based on ancient geography. Instead, it resulted from a decision by the British Olympic Committee to design the 1908 London course starting at Windsor Castle and ending specifically in front of the royal box in the stadium.
The sport has seen rapid evolution since then. In 1952, Emil Zátopek set an Olympic record despite never having run the full distance before. The two-hour barrier was first broken by Eliud Kipchoge in 2019 during an unsanctioned race in Vienna (1:59:40), while Sabastian Sawe became the first to do so in an official competition at the 2026 London Marathon with a time of 1:59:30.
