In short: The Olympic Games are more than just a series of races; they are 2,000 years of human history condensed into sixteen days. From their origins in ancient Greece to the modern era governed by international committees, these games represent a global effort to unite through sport.

The Olympic Games originated over 2,000 years ago in ancient Greece. While they have evolved significantly since those early days, they remain the world's leading sports event. Today, the competition is massive in scale, featuring athletes from more than 200 different countries who compete in both Summer and Winter editions.

The modern era of the Olympics began with the formation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. Based in Lausanne, Switzerland, the IOC holds the authority to select host cities—such as London for the 2012 Summer Games—and determine which sports are included in the program. Each participating nation also maintains its own national Olympic committee to manage its specific team.

Symbolism plays a vital role in the Games' identity. The iconic five linked rings on a white background represent the joining of five parts of the world: the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. The colors—blue, yellow, black, green, and red—were chosen because at least one appears on every national flag. This visual unity is mirrored in the opening ceremony, where teams enter in alphabetical order (based on the host country's language), with Greece always entering first and the host nation last.

The Games are defined by specific rituals of fire and reward. The Olympic flame is lit in Olympia, Greece, and carried by a series of runners to the host city, where it burns until the conclusion of the events. After each competition, medals are awarded for first (gold), second (silver), and third (bronze) place. The entire spectacle, including opening and closing ceremonies, typically spans 16 days.
