The Ironman was built by stitching three Hawaiian races into one day
The first Ironman simply glued together three existing Oahu events: a rough-water swim, a round-the-island bike race and the Honolulu Marathon. Moved to the lava fields of the Big Island in 1981, it became triathlon's world championship, where the men's record now stands at 7 hours 35 minutes 53 seconds.
From 1978 to 1980 the race ran on Oahu. Organisers borrowed the course of the Waikiki Roughwater Swim, 2.4 miles, and the Around-Oahu Bike Race, 115 miles and once spread over two days, then finished with the Honolulu Marathon. Three miles came off the ride so that it ended where the marathon began. In 1981 the event shifted to the quieter Big Island without changing the distances: a swim in Kailua-Kona Bay, a 112-mile ride through lava desert out to Hawi and back, and a marathon along the coast.
Spring was the original season. The switch to autumn in 1982 meant two championships were held that year. A category for physically challenged athletes began in 1997, with the same cut-off times as everyone else; Australia's John Maclean was the first to beat them. The World Triathlon Corporation owns the race, and athletes qualify through placings at other Ironman events or selected 70.3 races.
The pandemic scrambled the calendar. The 2020 race was pushed back and then cancelled, and the 2021 edition finally took place in St. George, Utah, in May 2022. From 2022 the women's and men's championships became separate races, and between 2023 and 2025 one was held in Nice, France, and the other in Kona. From 2026 both return to Kailua-Kona. Germany's Patrick Lange set the men's Kona course record in 2024, while Britain's Lucy Charles-Barclay holds the women's mark of 8 hours 24 minutes 31 seconds from 2023.
Entry once included a lottery: a $50 ticket for a chance at one of 100 places. A complaint in federal court in Tampa argued this was an illegal lottery under Florida law, and the corporation agreed to forfeit $2,761,910 collected since October 2012.
