Ishan Kishan turned his first ODI hundred into the fastest double century
In December 2022 Ishan Kishan reached 200 against Bangladesh in just 126 balls, a dozen fewer than Chris Gayle's record. At 24 he was also the youngest to make an ODI double, and the first to turn a maiden one-day century into one. A year later he stepped away, worn down and repeatedly benched.
Kishan was born in Patna on 18 July 1998, his family rooted in a village in Bihar's Aurangabad district. Because of a registration dispute between the Bihar association and the national board, he built his career in neighbouring Jharkhand. He captained India at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup and that November struck 273 against Delhi, a Ranji Trophy record for a Jharkhand batter.
His IPL rise ran through Mumbai Indians. In 2020 he was their top scorer with 516 runs in 14 matches and hit more sixes than anyone that season, including a 99 off 58 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Mumbai paid 15.25 crore rupees to bring him back for 2022, making him the second-costliest Indian at that auction. He moved to Sunrisers Hyderabad and hit a century on debut for them in 2025.
International cricket began brightly: 56 off 32 balls and a player-of-the-match award on his T20I debut against England on 14 March 2021. The Bangladesh double followed, including a 290-run stand with Virat Kohli. Then came the slump. In 2023 he took a break citing mental fatigue, later calling the spell depressing, and found support in the Bhagavad Gita.
The comeback was loud. Leading Jharkhand in the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he hit 101 off 49 balls in the final as his side beat Haryana by 69 runs for their first title, and finished as top scorer with 517 runs. Back in India colours in January 2026 after 785 days away, he made a maiden T20I hundred, 103 off 43 balls against New Zealand. At the 2026 T20 World Cup, which India won, he became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score a fifty in the tournament's history and was named player of the match against Pakistan.
