Kalvin Phillips went from Bielsa's Leeds anchor to a treble winner who barely played
Raised in poverty in Leeds while his mother worked two jobs, Kalvin Phillips became the heartbeat of his hometown club under Marcelo Bielsa and started for England at Euro 2020. Manchester City paid a reported £42 million for him in 2022. He collected a treble in his first season, yet struggled to get on the pitch.
Born on 2 December 1995, Phillips was one of four children, and his father was in prison while he grew up. He played for local side Wortley before entering the Leeds academy at 14, captained the youth teams and made his first-team debut in April 2015, scoring on his home debut against Cardiff days later. Early seasons were patchy under a rapid turnover of coaches, though he won the Championship's Young Player of the Month award in October 2016 and scored seven goals in 2017–18.
Bielsa's arrival in 2018 transformed him. The Argentine retrained him as a deep-lying defensive midfielder who could drop into central defence when the side used a back three, and he covered at centre-back when captain Liam Cooper was injured. Leeds turned down bids of around £27 million to keep him, gave him a five-year deal, and in 2019–20 won the Championship to return to the Premier League. On his top-flight debut at Anfield he set up a goal, and he later became one of just 70 players to reach 200 Leeds appearances.
After an England debut in 2020 he played at Euro 2020, where England lost the final, and at the 2022 World Cup. At City a shoulder operation and limited chances followed, and in December 2022 Pep Guardiola said publicly that he had come back overweight, remarks for which the manager apologised in February 2024. His first City goal was a penalty against Red Star Belgrade in December 2023.
Loans brought little relief. A spell at West Ham in 2024 included a red card and a clash with fans after a defeat at Newcastle, and at Ipswich he admitted his confidence had been worn down. In September 2025 he returned to the City side in the EFL Cup at Huddersfield, his first appearance for the club in 645 days.
