John Stones went from Barnsley teenager to treble-winning midfielder
When Manchester City paid 47.5 million pounds for John Stones in 2016, the club that raised him earned a windfall too. A sell-on clause sent 6.78 million to Barnsley, more than any fee they had ever received. The shy centre-back from South Yorkshire later reinvented himself in midfield and helped win a treble.
Stones was born in Barnsley in May 1994, grew up in nearby Thurlstone and came through the local academy, debuting in the Championship at 17 in a 4–0 home defeat to Reading. Everton bought him in January 2013 for about 3 million pounds. Within two years he was good enough that Chelsea bid three times one summer, rising to 30 million, and Everton turned down every offer along with his own request to leave.
At City he arrived as the second most expensive defender ever, behind David Luiz, and made his debut in Pep Guardiola's first competitive match. His early seasons drew media criticism, and the 2020 signings of Rúben Dias and Nathan Aké pushed him down the order. He answered with a revival alongside Dias, a place in the PFA Team of the Year and, in 2022–23, a surprising new role as a defensive midfielder.
That season was the peak. A Guardian writer compared him to Franz Beckenbauer after City thrashed Real Madrid 4–0 in the semi-final, and he started the 1–0 final win over Inter Milan in Istanbul that gave City their first European Cup. Across ten years he collected six league titles, three FA Cups and five League Cups. In July 2026 he joined Inter himself, on a free transfer.
For England he started every game at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, both ending in defeat in the final, and scored twice against Panama at the 2018 World Cup, the first City player to score for England at a finals since Trevor Francis in 1982. In October 2024 he captained his country for the first time.
