The studio that proved you don't need a crowd to build a masterpiece
In short: In an industry dominated by thousands of workers, Media Molecule operates on a radical philosophy: stay as small as possible. By rejecting the 'bloated' team model, they've created some of PlayStation's most innovative titles, proving that creative intimacy can outweigh industrial scale.
Founded in 2006 by four former Lionhead Studios employees, Media Molecule was built on a desire to escape the 'deadwood' of large-scale development. Creative director Mark Healey championed a philosophy of keeping the team small and focused, believing that excessive numbers lead to interpersonal tensions similar to a 'soap opera.' This approach was so influential that Hideo Kojima modeled his own studio, Kojima Productions, after Media Molecule's intimate, family-like atmosphere.
The studio's success is anchored in the LittleBigPlanet series, which sold 8.5 million units. Their relationship with Sony was forged through a 2006 exclusive deal where Sony owned the intellectual property in exchange for funding and a platform exclusive. This partnership allowed the studio to take risks on 'unusual' ideas, such as the physics-based 'Craftworld' pitch. One notable instance of their innovation was a 2019 presentation where Phil Harrison of Sony Worldwide Studios received an interactive 'PowerPoint' that was actually a playable game demo.
Despite their success, the studio has faced the realities of the industry. While they aimed to keep staff below 30 in the early days, the team grew to 135 by 2023 before experiencing layoffs in October of that year. They have also navigated a transition from being a 'single-threaded' company focused on one brand to a diverse developer, creating titles like Tearaway and the sandbox creation system Dreams, before eventually stepping away from primary development on the LittleBigPlanet series in 2011.
The studio's legacy is defined by user-generated content and creative freedom. From the fabric-based world of Sackboy to the paper-based world of Tearaway, Media Molecule has consistently prioritized unique mechanics over mass production. Even as they move into new projects, their DNA remains rooted in the belief that every individual in a small team must matter.
