How a 30-minute composition became the most-streamed video game track in history
In short: Most iconic tracks are polished in studios over months. Megalovania was born from a composer screaming into a microphone to capture a feeling. This raw, impulsive creation eventually transcended its niche origins to become a global cultural phenomenon, breaking records and defining an entire era of internet music culture.
The song originated in 2008 as part of the EarthBound Halloween Hack. Toby Fox, using the alias 'Radiation,' wanted to use the track 'Megalomania' from Live A Live for a final boss battle. However, he found the original music too difficult to transcribe and decided to compose something new. To capture the right energy, Fox literally screamed into a microphone to find a melody, a process he described as lengthy, before actually composing the track in just thirty minutes.
The title 'Megalovania' is a portmanteau of 'megalomania' and 'Transylvania,' intended to evoke a Halloween atmosphere. While it incorporates specific chords from 'Megalomania', the tune was derived from the music played during the final boss of Brandish 2: The Planet Buster. The track saw various iterations, including a 2011 remix for the webcomic Homestuck, stylized as 'MeGaLoVania' to distinguish it from the original. This version featured extended guitar sections and a different capitalization to mark its status as the third release.
The song reached massive mainstream visibility in 2015 with the release of Undertale, where it served as the boss music for the character Sans during the 'genocide' route. Its success was fueled by its 'repetitive riffs' and 'melodramatic, chiptune-esque palette,' which made it highly compatible with TikTok's meme culture. With more than 161 million streams, the track was declared by Guinness World Records in January 2024 as the most-streamed video game soundtrack song on Spotify, demonstrating how its constant reinvention drives its popularity.
Beyond its technical composition, the track has sparked academic and cultural debate. Analysts have noted that while its popularity stems from Undertale, its 'ferocity' and 'varying instrumentation' provide a constant sonic refreshment during combat. It has been performed in diverse settings, ranging from a circus act for Pope Francis in 2022 to orchestral renditions in Tokyo, cementing its status as a staple of modern digital history.
