The stadium that broke records for handball and hosted heavyweights
In short: While it serves as the home for Fortuna Düsseldorf, the Merkur Spiel-Arena is a versatile architectural feat. From hosting world heavyweight boxing titles to setting world records for handball attendance, this retractable-roof venue in Düsseldorf proves that modern sports infrastructure can transcend the boundaries of a single sport.
Located near the river Rhine in Düsseldorf, Germany, the Merkur Spiel-Arena was constructed between 2002 and 2004 to replace the former Rheinstadion. It was designed as a multi-purpose facility, featuring a retractable roof and a specialized heating system. These engineering choices allow the venue to host high-profile events comfortably in all weather conditions throughout the year.
The stadium's identity is fluid, often dictated by sponsorship and international obligations. It has been known as the LTU Arena, the Esprit Arena, and the Düsseldorf Arena. Because of sponsorship agreements and treaty duties, the venue took on the name Düsseldorf Arena during UEFA Euro 2024 and the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest. Currently, its naming rights are held by the gambling company Gauselmann, though it is officially known as the Merkur Spiel-Arena.
Beyond football, the arena has served as a stage for diverse athletic spectacles. It hosted the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe from 2005 to 2007 and the Race of Champions in 2010, featuring drivers like Michael Schumacher. It has also been a site for major boxing world heavyweight championship bouts, including three high-profile fights involving Wladimir Klitschko between 2010 and 2015. Notably, on January 10, 2024, it set a world record for the largest handball audience, with 53,586 spectators watching Germany face Switzerland.
Capacity has evolved over time to accommodate these varied demands. Originally built with 51,500 seats, the stadium underwent an expansion in the summer of 2010. By converting some seating areas into standing terraces, the current capacity was increased to 54,600.
