The Munich stadium that glows so brightly it can be seen from Austrian mountains
In short: The Allianz Arena is a marvel of engineering, featuring a facade of 2,760 inflated plastic panels that change color to match the home team. This luminous exterior is so powerful that on clear nights, the stadium is visible from 50 miles away, even from the peaks of Austrian mountains.
Opened in 2005, the Allianz Arena was designed by the architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron. Its most striking feature is its see-through exterior, composed of ETFE-foil panels only 0.2 mm thick. These panels are kept inflated with dry air and can be independently lit in red, blue, or white. While the stadium is capable of complex, multicolored displays, local police have restricted it to single-color schemes to prevent drivers on the nearby A9 Autobahn from being distracted by the shifting lights.
The arena’s construction was marked by a significant corruption scandal involving the stadium's management company. In 2004, CEO Karl-Heinz Wildmoser Jr. was charged with fraud and corruption for awarding construction contracts at inflated prices in exchange for kickbacks. He was later convicted and sentenced to four and a half years in prison. Despite this, the project proceeded, costing a total of €340 million, with an additional €210 million spent by the city and state on infrastructure, including major upgrades to the local U-Bahn subway lines and the A9 highway.
Originally shared by Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich, the stadium became the sole property of Bayern Munich in 2006 after they bought out their tenant's 50 per cent share for €11 million to save the club from bankruptcy. Today, the arena stands as a central hub for football, hosting major international events like the 2012 and 2025 Champions League Finals. It is also home to the FC Bayern Erlebniswelt museum and, as of 2025, is officially addressed as Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz 5, honoring the legendary German footballer.
