In short: The name Montevideo City Torque isn't just a branding choice; it is rooted in the physics of strength. Founded as a grassroots dream in 2007, the club has transformed from a local amateur side into a strategic outpost for one of the world's most powerful sports empires.

The club's identity began with a unique cross-pollination of business and engineering. Founded on December 26, 2007, by Uruguayan businessman Raúl Aquino Reynoso, the team was named after the mechanical principle of torque. This name was inspired by Marcelo Yaurreche, an electromechanic who had blogged about the concept of sporting ventures. The club began its journey in the local Liga de Punta Carretas before entering the Uruguayan football league system in the third tier during the 2008–09 season.

The path to the top was marked by persistence and a brief, failed merger. After several years of high finishes in the amateur division, the club merged with Huracán in May 2011 to form Huracán Torque, but the partnership dissolved just months later without a single game being played. The 2012–13 campaign saw Torque finally achieve advancement into the Segunda División. However, the climb was not linear; the club suffered a period of underachievement where it finished last in its division, only escaping relegation because the league organizers chose not to demote any clubs that year.

A major turning point occurred in April 2017 when the City Football Group (CFG), a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi United Group, completed its takeover. This acquisition linked Torque to global giants like Manchester City and New York City FC. The move was strategic, aimed at establishing a South American pipeline for talent. In 2020, the club officially rebranded to Montevideo City Torque to reflect these international ties and began constructing a new academy complex intended to be one of the most advanced in South America.

Today, the club serves as a sophisticated model of modern sports infrastructure. It has navigated the highs of promotion to the Primera División and the lows of relegation, most recently winning the Segunda División title in 2019. By combining its original vision of 'glory from scratch' with the resources of a global multi-club ownership model, Torque represents a modern evolution of how football clubs are built and scaled.
