The first Asian team to reach a World Cup quarter-final
In short: In 1966, a disciplined squad from a closed country stunned the football world by defeating Italy. They became the first Asian team to advance beyond the group stage, turning a diplomatic stalemate into a sporting miracle that still resonates in the history of the beautiful game.
North Korea's football journey is defined by both historic triumphs and intense geopolitical friction. Their debut on the world stage came in 1966, a campaign marked by a unique diplomatic hurdle: the United Kingdom, the host nation, did not recognize the legitimacy of the Pyongyang government. Consequently, the North Korean flag was flown, but their national anthem was never played before their matches.
Despite these tensions, the team—known as the Chollimas—achieved a landmark victory by defeating Italy 1–0 in the group stage. This win secured them a spot in the quarter-finals, a first for any Asian nation. They eventually fell 5–3 to Portugal, but the performance was so captivating that they were hailed as heroes by locals in Middlesbrough, where they were housed.
The team's trajectory has since been shaped by political decisions. They have frequently withdrawn from major tournaments, such as the 1968 and 1970 qualifiers, due to a refusal to face Israel. They also faced a significant hiatus between 1994 and 1998, coinciding with a national famine and a three-year mourning period following the death of Kim Il Sung.
More recently, the team has faced severe sanctions. In 2004, after refusing to issue visas to Jordanian players, the AFC suspended them from all Asian competition for a year. They eventually returned to the World Cup stage in 2010, following a period of rebuilding that included a record 21–0 victory against Guam in 2005.
