Oceania is building its first fully professional football league
In short: For years, the football landscape of Oceania lacked a high-level professional structure. That is changing in 2026 with the debut of the OFC Professional League. Designed to bridge the gap between regional play and global stages, it represents a massive structural shift for the sport in the Pacific.
The OFC Professional League (OFCPL) is the first fully professional association football league organized by the Oceania Football Confederation. While the project was first conceptualized in 2019 to foster professionalism, it faced significant hurdles. Initial plans to launch in 2021 were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading the OFC Executive Committee to eventually vote in November 2022 to move forward with a revised timeline.
The league's structure is designed to maximize regional representation while ensuring high-level competition. Eight charter clubs joined the 2026 debut season, comprising one Australian, three Polynesian, and four Melanesian teams. The roster concept prioritizes Oceanian players, though it will also feature marquee players from other regions. Notably, the league includes a mix of pre-existing clubs, such as Auckland FC and PNG Hekari, and entirely new entities created specifically for this competition, like Tahiti United and Vanuatu United.
The competition operates on a unique circuit format running from January to May. Teams play a minimum of 14 matches in a double round-robin format across various locations. Following the regular season, the league splits into two playoff groups: a Leaders Playoff Group for the top four teams and a Challengers Playoff Group for the bottom four. This structure determines the path to the semi-finals and grand final. Aside from South Melbourne's Asian Football Confederation link, the league acts as the main route to the FIFA Club World Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
