The athlete who changed his nationality to find his home
In short: Born in New York but representing Antigua and Barbuda at his first world youth championships, Rai Benjamin faced a complex path to the American flag. His journey from a displaced youth to the 2024 Olympic gold medalist highlights a unique story of identity, timing, and elite athletic evolution.
Rai Benjamin's early competitive career was defined by a geographical and legal tug-of-war. Born in New York to an Antiguan cricketer, Benjamin initially represented Antigua and Barbuda at the 2013 World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine. Because he was born in New York, he desired to compete for the United States, but a 2017 IAAF suspension on all transfers of allegiance meant he had to wait until summer 2018 for his request to be approved.
Once his eligibility was secured, Benjamin's rise was meteoric. He became the 72nd person to break the 20-second barrier in the 200 meters in 2018. His collegiate career at UCLA and USC was marked by records, including a 47.02-second 400m hurdles time that equaled the second-fastest in history at the time. He also helped set a world best indoor 4x400m relay time of 3:00.77 in early 2018, contributing a split of 44.35 seconds—the fastest ever recorded indoors.
Benjamin eventually cemented his legacy as one of the greatest hurdlers of all time. He won the 400m hurdles gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a time of 46.46 seconds, equaling his own world-leading mark. His career is defined by a fierce rivalry with Karsten Warholm and Alison dos Santos, pushing the limits of human speed. By 2025, he secured a second consecutive world gold in Tokyo, overcoming a brief disqualification for a dislodged hurdle to claim the title.
