From a childhood tragedy to breaking the world record
In short: At ten months old, Alison dos Santos suffered third-degree burns from a pan of hot oil. The incident left him with visible scars and a shy personality. Today, he is one of history's fastest athletes, having shattered the 400m hurdles world record in 2026.
Dos Santos' journey to elite athletics was shaped by early physical trauma. Following a four-month hospital stay post-accident, markings remained across his chest, left arm, face, scalp, and forehead. These marks initially made him shy, leading him to stay alone in his room until he began pursuing sports. He first practiced judo from age six to fourteen but was forced to quit due to high training costs.
He transitioned to athletics in 2013 at Pedro Badran State Technical School under coach Ana Fidélis. His nickname, "Piu," originated from a local athlete who resembled a homeless man of the same name. By age 16, dos Santos was already competing against adults. He quickly ascended the international stage, winning bronze at the 2018 World U20 Championships and gold at the 2019 Pan American Games, where he set a South American under-20 record of 48.45 seconds.
His career reached a historic peak in 2022 when he became the first Brazilian man to win gold at the World Athletics Championships. He continued his dominance by winning multiple Diamond League titles and securing Olympic bronze medals in both 2020 and 2024. On August 27, 2026, at the Zürich Diamond League, dos Santos clocked a world-record time of 45.80 seconds in the 400m hurdles, becoming only the second man to ever run under 46 seconds in that event.
Dos Santos attributes his success to specific tactical shifts in training designed to improve both his explosive start and his finishing strength. His trajectory from a secluded child to a global champion highlights a remarkable narrative of resilience, overcoming physical limitations to redefine the limits of human speed.
