The resilience of a heavyweight who survived a grueling path to the UFC
In short: Rizvan Kuniev's journey to the top of the UFC heavyweight rankings is a masterclass in persistence. From a failed contract offer to a drug test controversy and multiple fight cancellations, Kuniev had to navigate a minefield of setbacks before finally securing his place among the elite.
Born on March 10, 1992, Rizvan Kuniev established himself as a formidable force in the heavyweights before entering the world's premier MMA promotion. His early career was marked by a solid 9–2–1 record, with only two losses. A pivotal moment came at Eagle FC 31, where he captured the Heavyweight title by defeating Vladimir Dainenko via corner stoppage. However, his path to the UFC was not immediate; despite winning his debut on Dana White's Contender Series against Edivan Santos in September 2021, he was initially denied a contract.
Kuniev's career faced significant hurdles, including a notable setback in 2023. While he initially won a unanimous decision against Renan Ferreira in the Professional Fighters League, the result was overturned to a no contest following a failed drug test. He eventually secured his UFC entry on August 20, 2024, by knocking out Hugo Cunha in the first round of the Contender Series. His debut against Curtis Blaydes was a saga of delays, moving three times before finally occurring on June 21, 2025, where Kuniev lost a split decision despite 11 out of 13 media sources scoring the fight in his favor.
Kuniev's recent momentum has been remarkable. After a unanimous decision victory over Jailton Almeida in February 2026, he faced Tyrell Fortune in July 2026. He secured a second-round technical knockout via knees, earning a $100,000 Fight of the Night award. As of July 25, 2026, Kuniev sits at #5 in the Meta UFC heavyweight rankings, preparing for a high-stakes clash against Alexander Volkov on October 24, 2026.
