How a bullied child became a viral sensation in the UFC
In short: From surviving on bananas in Thailand to fighting for the world's premier MMA organization, Rafael Fiziev's journey is defined by resilience. After turning to Muay Thai at age 11 to combat bullying, the former undercover police officer has become a striking specialist known for physics-defying defensive movements.
Born in Korday, Kazakhstan, to an Azerbaijani father and a Russian mother, Fiziev's path to professional mixed martial arts was anything but linear. After moving to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, he began training in Muay Thai at age 11 to defend himself against bullies. This foundation in striking eventually expanded into a diverse combat repertoire including boxing, wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, and combat sambo.
Fiziev's ascent was marked by extreme hardship. While training as a Muay Thai fighter in Thailand, he was so impoverished that he relied on Buddhist temples for sustenance, surviving primarily on pineapples and bananas. He also briefly worked as an undercover police officer before resigning to pursue professional fighting with total focus.
His fighting style is characterized by explosive, technical striking and a defensive movement so fluid it once went viral for resembling a scene from 'The Matrix.' This ability to slip high kicks with minimal movement has become a hallmark of his lightweight division presence. Though he prefers standing exchanges, he has demonstrated the ability to adapt to the grappling demands of MMA.
His career has been punctuated by significant shifts in identity and location. In 2021, Fiziev stopped representing Kyrgyzstan due to religious discrimination against Shia Muslims, a faith he practices devoutly. He now resides in Phuket, Thailand, and represents Azerbaijan in competition. As of September 2026, he remains a highly ranked contender in the UFC lightweight division.
