The ultimate football chameleon who could play anywhere but goal
In short: In a sport of rigid specializations, Sergi Roberto defied the mold. Under Luis Enrique, he became a tactical Swiss Army knife, capable of filling seven different positions on the pitch. His versatility was so profound that his manager noted he could play anywhere—provided he could do it well.
Roberto's career is a masterclass in tactical adaptability. While primarily a central midfielder, his ability to transition into a defensive midfielder, full-back, or winger allowed managers to solve complex problems on the fly. This reached its peak during the 2015–16 season, where he was reconverted by Luis Enrique to play as a right-back. During that period alone, he featured in as many as seven different positions for Barcelona.
This versatility was not just a novelty; it was a high-level skill set. His manager praised him for possessing the pace, strength, and accurate passing required to execute different roles effectively. This unique profile made him a vital asset for a club seeking to maintain tactical fluidity. His reliability was further cemented by his longevity, making 373 competitive appearances for Barcelona before departing as a free agent in June 2024.
Beyond his club versatility, Roberto’s career highlights include winning seven La Liga championships and two Champions League titles. By netting a 95th-minute goal during 2017, he was instrumental in a landmark feat where Barcelona became the initial team to reverse a four-goal deficit within the Champions League. Even as he moved into the later stages of his career with clubs like Como and LA Galaxy, his experience as a multi-functional leader remained his defining trait.
