The versatile veteran who defied age to rewrite the record books
In short: From a struggling youngster in Madrid to a legendary figure in the Bundesliga, Zé Roberto's career is a masterclass in adaptation. He transitioned from a left-sided defender to a creative midfielder, eventually becoming the oldest goalscorer in Copa Libertadores history at over 42 years old.
José Roberto da Silva Júnior, known as Zé Roberto, has achieved a rare feat in professional football: making over 1,000 career appearances. His journey saw him navigate the highs of winning the 1996–97 La Liga with Real Madrid and the lows of being left out of the 2002 FIFA World Cup squad due to a calf injury. His career was defined by a remarkable ability to reinvent himself, moving from an attacking full-back to a defensive midfielder during his successful second stint at Bayern Munich.
His time in Germany was particularly impactful. At Bayer Leverkusen, he was a key figure during a period where the club finished as Bundesliga runners-up on three occasions and reached the 2002 UEFA Champions League final. He later joined Bayern Munich in May 2002 for a reported €12 million fee. While his first spell saw him win multiple domestic doubles, his return to the club in 2007 proved his tactical evolution, as he formed a solid defensive midfield partnership with Mark van Bommel.
Even in the twilight of his career, Zé Roberto remained a force. On 24 May 2017, while playing for Palmeiras, he scored a 90th-minute goal against Atlético Tucumán. Aged 42 years and 10 months, he set a new Copa Libertadores record for the oldest scorer, overtaking Óscar Aguirregaray. This longevity allowed him to transition from a world-class player to a technical advisor and a major fitness influencer in Brazil.
