The Silvertown Tunnel: A New Toll for a Historic District
In short: From a site of industrial devastation and revolutionary strikes, Silvertown is entering a new era of infrastructure. A new tunnel charge, set to begin in 2025, will manage traffic while funding the very infrastructure that connects this historic East London district to the rest of the city.
The Silvertown Tunnel is part of a major infrastructure project designed to manage traffic levels across London. Starting April 7, 2025, drivers will face charges for crossing the tunnel. These fees are intended to repay the construction costs of the new Silvertown Tunnel and provide ongoing funding for the maintenance and operation of both the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels. The charging system operates without barriers or tollbooths, using cameras to read number plates as vehicles enter.
The pricing structure is designed to balance accessibility with traffic management. While charges apply daily between 06:00 and 22:00, a tiered system exists for those using Auto Pay. This includes off-peak rates for most times, including weekends, and specific peak charges for Monday to Friday during the busiest morning and evening windows. Local residents from the City of London or 12 East London Boroughs receive a 50% reduction, while specific perks for charities and small firms are offered within Tower Hamlets, Newham, or Greenwich.
This modern infrastructure sits atop a complex industrial history. Silvertown was named after Stephen William Silver, who established a rubber works in 1852. The area has seen extreme industrial shifts, from the 1889 strike involving 3,000 workers to the 1917 Silvertown explosion—one of the largest in the British Isles—which killed 73 people. Today, while the district faces a £3.5 billion redevelopment, it remains anchored by the Tate & Lyle sugar refinery, a landmark of the area's manufacturing heritage.
