From financial constraints to a world-record-winning T20 double
In short: Shivam Dube’s journey to the pinnacle of cricket wasn't a straight line. After being forced to quit school cricket at 14 due to poverty, he reinvented himself to become a cornerstone of India's world-winning T20 squads. His story is a masterclass in persistence.
Dube's path to professional cricket was nearly severed by early life hardships. Born in Bombay in 1993 to a migrant father from Uttar Pradesh, he was forced to stop playing for Hansraj Morarji Public School at age 14. The reason was twofold: he was overweight and lacked the financial means to focus on his fitness. It took five years of rebuilding before he returned to the game at 19, eventually earning a spot in the Mumbai Under-23s.
His rise through the domestic circuit was marked by rapid versatility. After debuting in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2016, he became a standout for Mumbai. By the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy season, he was a dual threat, scoring his first first-class century and becoming the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai with 23 dismissals in just eight matches. His ability to strike from both ends—hitting five sixes in an over while maintaining a high wicket tally—caught the attention of IPL scouts.
Dube eventually became a vital component of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Indian national team. He played a pivotal role in India's record-breaking third ICC Men's T20 World Cup title in 2026. During that tournament, he contributed 235 runs at a 169.06 strike rate, including a crucial unbeaten 26 in the final. His career is defined by this transition from a sidelined youth to a high-impact all-rounder capable of anchoring a chase or dismantling a middle order.
Beyond the pitch, Dube has balanced his career with a growing family in Mumbai, marrying Anjum Khan in 2021 and becoming a father to two children, Ayaan and Mehwish, by early 2025.
