The man who survived a kidney blockage to become a baseball icon
In short: Trevor Hoffman's path to the Hall of Fame was nearly derailed by a medical emergency at six weeks old. After a life-altering surgery and a career-threatening shoulder injury, he reinvented his entire pitching style to become the most dominant closer of his era.
Born in 1967, Hoffman faced a severe health crisis as an infant, requiring the removal of a damaged kidney due to an arterial blockage. This condition dictated his athletic future; he was barred from football and wrestling to protect his remaining kidney. Even at the University of Arizona, the school feared a baseball could strike his remaining organ, leading Hoffman to convince them that his right side—the side not facing the pitcher when hitting—was safe.
Hoffman's professional journey was defined by adaptation. Originally a shortstop with a rare '80' arm rating on a 20–80 scale, he was converted to a pitcher in 1991 after struggling as a hitter. His career was further transformed in 1994 when a freak accident—diving for a football and landing on his shoulder—permanently diminished his fastball velocity. Forced to reinvent himself, he developed one of the premier changeups in the game, a move that anchored his success as a closer for the San Diego Padres.
His dominance reached legendary status in 1998, a year that defined 'Trevor Time.' Accompanied by the tolling bells of AC/DC's 'Hells Bells,' Hoffman recorded a staggering 53 saves, including a streak of 41 consecutive save opportunities. In 2018, the Baseball Hall of Fame welcomed him, having previously become the initial athlete to hit 500 and 600 saves. Today, he continues to influence the sport as a senior advisor for the Padres' baseball operations.
